Cynthia Boggs

Cynthia, from Des Moines, WA, brings to Type A! the “triple threat”—with not only a powerful and soulful alto voice, but many years of TV, film and theater credits as well. In addition to several indie films, Cynthia has appeared on TV’s the Daily Show and Evening Magazine doing her renowned impersonation of Marilyn Monroe. This multifaceted actor has landed starring roles in many regional theater productions.  She is also an accomplished studio singer and takes on a dual role in Type A! as choreographer.  To see this blonde bombshell perform is as much of a treat as it is to hear her!

 

Yvaes' Diirell
Vocalist
 

Yvaes, (pronounced Yah-vah-say) originally from Flint, MI started singing at the age of two in the doctor’s office and even attracted the attention of Berry Gordy when he was in elementary school.  Before moving to Seattle in ’88 he sang briefly with mid-west groups including Great Lakes Music Box who toured with the likes of  Maurice Day, Natalie Cole, Enchantment, Peabo Bryson and Teena Marie.  Yvaes’ only started singing routinely in public at Antioch church in Kirkland in 1995.  He lists among his musical influences, Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross and Gospel artist Daryl Coley.  An avid poker player, he and his wife also write music whenever they get a break from raising six children.

 



Julie Hill
Vocalist

 

Julie, from Riverton, New Jersey, is a newcomer to the music scene, but is the anchor of the Type A! vocal section.  A registered nurse by profession, Julie has always been encouraged by friends and family to sing professionally.  Her uncanny natural ability to harmonize with perfect pitch made her the perfect choice to provide background vocals for Type A!.  The only true soprano in the group, her voice adds that needed sparkle to the band's vocal presentation.

 

Sonya Kaye
Vocalist

Sonya, from Tacoma, WA is an international artist who has performed in places such as France and England. She and her band performed during the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia and in 2002 in Salt Lake City.  Sonya has participated in a number of local community events as well, including several performances of the National Anthem for the Seattle Supersonics. She also has performed along with international jazz greats including Jonathan Butler and Brian Bromberg at venues such as Seattle's popular Jazz Alley.  Sonya's music is being heard on over 440 radio stations nationwide, including Seattle's popular Christian station, KCMS 105.3.

Kurt Kolstad
Drums / Vocals
 

Kurt, from Spanaway, WA, is a drummer with many years of experience at the highest levels in the music industry.  He has played with many nationally known bands, including Tower of Power, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Miles, Jr.Wells, Jr.Walker, The Coasters, The Drifters, and The Shirells.  Kurt is known as a player who locks the groove "in the pocket" with a great deal of snap and fire power, and plays many styles of music fluently, from Funk, to Fusion, to R&B, to the Blues.  Harvey Siders of the Tacoma News Tribune writes of Kurt¹s playing; "Kurt Kolstad is fiercely swinging on drums, blurring the lines separating jazz, blues and R&B".  Kurt is also a prolific songwriter, and is an active member of ASCAP.



Mark Adams
Lead Guitar
 

 Mark, who graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle, studied jazz under Gary Peacock at Cornish College of the Arts. As a member of the group Bensusen, Mark played in Kenny G.'s first series of concerts as a solo artist. He also performed with Sam Smith, one of Seattle's foremost male R&B vocalists. For two years, Mark toured Japan and the western United States as a member of the show band, The Steppen Stones. From 1987 to 1993, he performed in Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Atlantic City. During that time, Mark played with the Imperials as well as Sonny Turner, former lead vocalist of the Platters. Since moving back to Seattle in 1994, Mark has played with many local bands including: Slamm, Blue Bossa, Project L.A, Barbie Anaka, Korla Wygal, Martin Ross, Society's Child, Entourage, Elite, Cornucopia, Coolade, Hit Explosion, Gruvbox and Player's Club. In addition to playing guitar, Mark plays bass and sings.



Jimmy Thomas (JT)
Bass

 

 Jimmy, who graduated from Lakeside High School in Seattle, has been playing music for 30 years.  He started out as a guitar player then converted to bass full time in the mid-80s, and has played with Mass Hypnosis, Full Circle, Deems Tsutakawa, Mark Dufresne, The Squirrels, and Santana¹s Michael Shrieve.  Having a reputation as a "frightening" bass player who can play the most technically demanding material, JT is in high demand in the recording studio industry.  He has written soundtracks for several theater productions, and has engineered many recordings, including spoken word audio books and numerous CD projects for Seattle bands.
 
Johnny Conga
Percussion

 
 Johnny, from New York City by way of Los Angeles and Miami, is the son of a Cuban father who was an avid collector of Latin music. At age six, young Johnny took his first bongo lessons from an uncle and by age 17 was playing drums professionally. He learned and studied congas under George "Sabu" Caldwell, a percussionist for Dizzy Gillespie. Johnny Conga has, on his own, and with his bands, appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, on Harry Belafonte's PBS series, Routes of Rhythm, and with international stars such as Paquito de Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres, Sergio Mendes, Gloria Gaynor, Maynard Ferguson and others.
 
Andy Bryant
Guitar / Vocals

 
 Andy, from Philadelphia, had his first musical influences playing classical flute in elementary school.  He picked up the guitar a few years ago and was a founding member of the popular Seattle area band 8 Feet Standing until leaving in May of 2003 to form Type A!  He lists a myriad of musical influences, including Steely Dan, Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Santana, Bob Marley, Lyle Love, and Stevie Wonder.  However, his first love of music is old school funk and R&B.  By seeking out and associating himself with a group of some of the finest musicians in the Northwest, Andy has put together the group in which he and his fellow band mates have always dreamed of playing.


Paul Richardson
Keyboard

 

Paul began his career at the age of 12 playing in local talent shows in the Seattle-Tacoma area. He is a self-taught musician, who began teaching himself to play piano at the age of five. Since that time he has recorded and shared the stage with various renowned musicians throughout the United States. Herbie Hancock, The Headhunters, Ernestine Andersen, Charles Lloyd, Maya Angelou, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Stephanie Mills, Najee, Chuck Mangioni, The SOS Band and Little Milton to name a few. He's performed in the Paul Robeson Theaters production of Gods Trombones, The Intiman Theaters production of the Black Nativity and the Seattle Group Theaters production of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar And Grill.

John Sakura
Trumpet / Flugelhorn / Percussion

 

John, who graduated from Rainier Beach High School in Seattle and the University of Washington, began his musical career with the popular Latin-Funk band Tamaraw in the early 70's.  Before the age of 16 his credits included opening for Tower of Power, playing with Johnny "Hammond" Smith and a two week stint with Blues legend Albert Collins.  After studying music at Western Washington State College, he "hit the road".  With a warm recommendation from Jimi Hendrix's father Al, he toured with Hot Ice from Oakland, CA.  John went on to perform with Ann Wilson of Heart at the Experience Music Project Grand Opening, sharing the stage with Sir Mix A Lot, the Presidents and No Doubt.  His recordings include Tony Gable and 206's "Seven Hills" and Roger Rogers' "Good Times".

 
Ted Bowden
Lead Trumpet
 
 

Ted, a Washington native, has been a lead trumpet player in the Seattle area since 1983, playing all styles of music including rock, pop, big band, Latin/salsa and classical.  Performing with the Magnolia Big Band, The Jazz Police, The New Blues Brothers Revue, and Orquesta Nueva Era among others, Ted is also a founding member of Latin Expression, a band that is proud to be celebrating its 20th year.  In addition to playing local shows with Linda Ronstadt, The Mills Brothers, The O'Jays and Lalo Rodriguez, Ted has toured extensively with artists such as Buddy Greco, vibraphonist Terry Gibbs and stars of the Lawrence Welk Show, playing lead trumpet and road managing.  In addition to recording TV and radio commercials for numerous clients including Primera Blue Cross and Taco Time, Ted also served as road manager and stage director for comedian Steve Allen.

 

 

Dan Marcus
Trombone / EVI
 

Dan, early on, was a member of the Big Bands of Ray Charles and Woody Herman, and had performed in upwards of 100 countries by his early 20's. Dan comes from a musical family in the San Francisco Bay Area, and attended Cal State Northridge.  Since moving to the Northwest in 1990, Dan has enjoyed being first-call for many shows and with many musical groups, both as musician and arranger, and also does quite a bit of studio work. Each year he performs at the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, and throughout his career has worked with many "names", including Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Stan Kenton's Jazz Orchestra, Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Caldwell, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Spinners; need we say more?  He spent several years with the very popular Teatro Zinzanni circus band, making bizarre noises of all kinds.  

 
Scott Adams
Tenor Sax / Vocals

 

"Junior", who graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle, studied with Kenny G instructors Johnnie Jessen and Roy Cummings as well as Jabo Ward and Don Lanphere.  He toured Korea after majoring in music at the University of Washington.  He then played with The Seattle Blues Revue, Nicole Fournier, and Molasses.  He was also a founding member of the band Apollo Creed.  Scott toured with Ann Wilson of Heart, acting as her horn section contractor and arranger, performing around the country, on VH-1's Fairway To Heaven and for President Clinton.  In addition to being a member of Stolen Ogre, Scott has played with Slash (Guns n Roses), Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) and John Popper of Blues Traveler among others.

Dan Wickham
Clarinet/Saxophone
 

Dan, a graduate of the UW School of Music and the University of Puget Sound, has studied with William O. Smith, Don Lanphere, Michael Brockman, and is one of the premier clarinet/saxophone performers and teachers in the Seattle area.  Since 1999, Dan has worked as a music teacher in the Highline School District.  He has played with such luminaries as The Temptations, Clint Holmes, and Frank Sinatra Jr. and locally, with the Seattle Symphony, The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, Fred Radke, the Harry James Orchestra, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and the Od Yishama Orchestra, as well as his own group, Swing City.

Mark Miller
Production

Mark has been doing live sound reinforcement and audio recording since 1996. Owner of Kalara Studios www.kalarastudios.com, he has traveled to all four corners of the US doing remote concert recordings for such artists as the Isley Brothers, Dickey Betts, Percy Sledge, The Blind Boys of Alabama, DMX, Body Count, and Little Feat.  He has not only had the opportunity to capture great performances, but has had the pleasure to engineer records and shows featuring White, Usher, Nelly, The Bad Things, Aimee Mann and BB King among others.  Mark has an over-whelming love of music and the intimacy that goes into creating a quality performance.

Randy, from Anchorage, Alaska, began performing professionally at the age of 15 with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra.  Upon attending Western Washington University, he had the privilege of studying with the great Bill Cole.  Since moving to Seattle in 1980, he has performed shows at virtually every nightclub in the area.  Seeking to perfect his craft by playing many hours a day.  Randy performed for nearly five years on cruise ships from the Atlantic to the Pacific.  He was hired to perform by Columbia Artists for such stars as Bob Hope, Red Skelton Vic Damone, Mel Toume, The Temptations, The Supremes, and The Manhattan Transfer.  His lead trumpet credits include the orchestras of Harry James, and Tom and Jimmy Dorsey.
